According to purana, when Dhevas ans Asuras were trying to get amirtham (nectar) from parkadal, halahala poison came out. Dhevas pleaded Lord Shiva to save them. Lord Shiva took the poison in his mouth and held the poison in this throat. His throat became blue, hence Lord Shiva is called Neelakanda.


After taking poison, Lord Shiva performed celestial dance between the horns of Nandi Deva during Pradhosham. Hence special poojas are held for Lord Shiva and Nandi Deva during every pradhosham.


Pradosham Puja and Fasting:


Special abishekam using milk, curd, honey, panchamirtham, panchakavi, tender coconut, paneer, sandal, thiruneer and other diraviams, with the chanting of vedas, and archana with vilva leaves and other flowers, deeparadhanai are performed to Lord Shiva and Nandi Deva. During the period of Pradosham, many devotees fast by not taking any food and water. Devotees will go to temple, sing devotional songs and offer prayer


Soma Suthra Pradakshanam


During pradosham, special type of circumbulation called Soma Suthra Pradakshanam is done i.e., start from Nandi Deva move leftwards (apradakshanam) till Chandikeswara and offer pranams to Chandikeshwara, from there get back the same way to Nandi Deva,offer pranam to Nandi deva, now move rightward (pradakshanam) till Komugi, from there get back the same way to Nandi Deva, pray Lord Shiva between the horns of Nandi Deva. This is one circumbulation. Likewise performing three Circumbulation is called Soma Suthra Pradakshanam.


Sani Pradosham


Pradosham on saturday is called Sani Pradhosham. Sani Pradosham is special because it is believed that Lord Shiva took poison on saturday. Pradhosham before Maha Shivarathri is called Maha Pradosham. Maha pradhosham on saturday is called Sani Maha Pradhosham.


Pradosham Significance:


It is believed worshipping one Pradhosham equals going to temple for 15 days, worshipping 11 pradosham equals seeing one Kumbhabhishekam. No rebirth for those worshipping 120 pradhosham
