Main political parties — BJP, Congress and the JD(S) — have fielded candidates for all District. BJP claims it will capture power in 15 districts. Congress also claims it will capture power in 15 districts and 50 % of total seats. JD(S) claims it will win 40% of total seats and secure power in 12-13 districts.

Karnataka Zilla Panchayat (ZP) and Taluk Panchayat (TP) Election was held in 2 Phases – 26 December 2010 and 31 December 2010 & 01 January 2011. Fifty per cent of the seats, both in ZP and TP, are reserved for women. For the First Time Karnataka Election Commission is using Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) for TP and ZP elections. The first phase of the election in 12 districts was held on 26th December 2010. The 12 districts are: Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagaram, Chitradurga, Kolar, Chickballapur, Shimoga, Tumkur, Bidar, Bellary, Raichur and Yadgir. The second phase of election in 17 districts was held on Friday, 31 December 2010 and in Gulbarga district on 1 January 2011. The 17 districts are: Chickmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Hasan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore, Chamarajanagara, Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Davanagere and Koppal.
